Hillgrove and Lovejoy Play In Friday Night Spotlight

The rain gear might be needed on this Football Friday Night, but don’t let that prevent you from getting out and supporting the high school football team in your area.

A Cobb County vs Clayton County showdown looks to be tonight’s big show. 2-1 Hillgrove travels south to meet 2-0 Lovejoy at Twelve Oaks Stadium.

The Lovejoy Wildcats feature a high octane offense that hung 41 points on Dutchtown last week. Wide receiver Preston Willams had 14 touchdown receptions last season, he has 4 touchdowns in 2014. Williams is verbally committed to Tennessee.

Hillgrove is coming off a bitter setback against North Gwinnett last week. After opening the season with a solid win over Lassiter, the Hawks squeezed out a 14-6 win over Shiloh It will be interesting to see which Hillgrove team gets off the bus when doors open in Clayton County.

There are two more games on the southside that are on my radar this week. 3-0 Sandy Creek visits Newnan, while Whitewater welcomes East Coweta in a battle of undefeated teams.

The Lanier Longhorns are new faces in region 8-AAAAA, and will take a 2-0 record into tonight’s contest with 1-0 Flowery Branch. 2-0 Woodward Academy will invade a Lovett team that is coming off a loss to Marist last week. The Lions have won the last 4 meetings in the series.

It will be test time for a pair of 2-0 teams. Druid Hills will face a major test when defending state champ Creekside meets them at Adams Stadium. The Seminoles got a big road win at Carver-Columbus last week.

The Cambridge Bears have only been playing football for 3 years, but are off to a 2-0 start in 2014. I have heard of bear sightings near Rome. Tonight those bears will be from Cambridge, as that program tries to go 3-0 for the first time in school history.

Then there are the teams that started the season with great expectations, who have yet to get that first victory. I’m not saying that these teams won’t make the playoffs, but with region play beginning they need to break into the win column real soon.

McEachern leads this parade of “0”. The O-2 Indians were preaseason number one. Tonight they host a 2-0 Peachtree Ridge team at Powder Springs. Archer is 0-2 and tonight must face backyard rival Grayson. Mickey Conn’s Rams are 2-0 after an impressive road win over Langston Hughes. In Dekalb, the ML King Lions are always a playoff contender, but have stumbled out of the gate at 0-2. In fact, the Lions have yet to score a point. Tonight they face Tucker in what would usually be classified as battle of Dekalb titans. At 1-2 Tucker’s narrow losses have come to defending state AAAAAA champ Norcross and defending national champ Booker T. Washington (Miami). The Tigers have played better each week and if MLK doesn’t get some issues solved the Lions could be a speed bump for Tucker playoff express.

And finally, I can’t write about the parade of “0” and not include Clarkston at Meadowcreek. The two teams are painfully familiar this subject. So far this season the Mustangs are 0-2, while the Angoras are 0-3. The issues these two programs face are well documented. This week they have practiced and tonight they will line up to play the game. Hopefully somebody’s “0” will go.
