Buford Steps Up For This Week’s Main Event

For years I have heard high school football fans around the Metro Atlanta area howl about the Buford Wolves. “It’s not fair that Buford dominates the lower classifications when their team’s talent, size and depth is more like teams from the higher classes “,and ” I sure wish that Buford would play one of the powerhouse programs from a higher class to see what would happen”.

Well, this Friday night you will get you chance. I know that some would like for it to be one of the Wolves powerful Gwinnett County neighbors like Norcross, North Gwinnett, Brookwood, or Grayson. Don’t hold your breath. Instead it will be the McEachern Indians making the trip from Powder Springs to Buford.

The Indians have had a week off to rebound from that season opening loss to North Gwinnett in the final game of the Corky Kell Classic.A game that ended at 1:30am.

Buford opened with a nationally televised win over Florida powerhouse Trinity Christian, then spent last week tuning up on Berkmar for this week’s meeting with last year’s class AAAAAA semifinalist.

Elsewhere around the metro Lovett plays Marist. Coach Mike Muschamp will tell you that it was the Lions come from behind , overtime win over the War Eagles that propelled his squad on the road to the Georgia Dome and the class AA state crown. But, this is a new year, and Marist was impressive in their season opening win over Tallahassee Godby last Saturday. Also watch for Greater Atlanta Christian at Eagle’s Landing Christian and St Pius roars into Woodward Academy.

Norcross will take a 2-0 record to Milton, North Gwinnett travels to Hillgrove. I’ve got my eye on Cherokee this season, and they play at Etowah. Marietta vists Newnan in a game that always seems to go down to the wire. North Paulding and Allatoona meet in a matchup of power programs on the rise. I am also keeping an eye on the Grayson vs Langston Hughes matchup as a Gwinnett County program makes a rare visit to the southside.

Speaking of the southside, there are three teams with rough assignments in South Georgia this week. Riverdale at Thomas County Central, Luella at Tift Couny, and Drew at Lowndes, enjoy the ride fellas.

Let’s see how ML King responds from last week’s setback against Norland (Fl), when they face a Mays team with lofty dreams. In the city, Carver(Atl) will duel Grady .

Defending state champions will hit the road, as Creekside will try to find the win column at Carver-Columbus while Griffin heads to Burke County for the “Battle Of The Bears”. Carrollton is the team that Griffin beat for the title. This week the 0-2 Trojans will march into Calhoun for a matchup that could be the best of the night.

Get out and enjoy a high school football game in your area.
