There’s an old saying that goes , ” Join the Navy and see the world .” Well I’m a member of an Army, the GPB Sports Army, and on Friday nights it has become the next closest thing. Last week were traveled to Moultrie and got a taste of Friday Night South Georgia Style. It was a first for me. The folks at Colquitt County are so passionate about their football, and the defending state champions showed us why. I doubt that anyone can recall seeing Valdosta playing in a game with running clock and the Wildcats were on the losing end of the score.
This week the Football Friday’s In Georgia spotlight returns to the metro area and makes a stop on the southside. Woodward Academy (7-0) will host Sandy Creek (6-1), in a game that could determined the champion of Region 5-AAAA. Last year the War Eagles flew into Tyrone and beat the Patriots, breaking Sandy Creek’s stanglehold on the region top spot.
This might just end up being one of the best matchups of the season and I can’t wait to see it. But there is another reason that I am really looking forward to the Sandy Creek – Woodward Academy game. It will be my birthday. Now, I’m not a big birthday person, not one for a lot of celebrating, but it just so happens that this week’s GPB Sports game will be played in a section of town that I am very familiar with.
For me birthdays are a time to take inventory of life ; past, present, and future. I grew up and attended high school in East Point, not far away from College Park, where Woodward Academy is located. My Dad worked at the airport. The old Hartsfield terminal was just off Virginia Avenue, just blocks away from the Woodward Academy campus. I’m looking forward to taking the Virginia Avenue exit off I-85 , passing some familiar sights, and taking part in what promises to be a very special installment of Football Fridays In Georgia. My broadcast partner Matt Stewart, also grew up on the southside, and I’m sure he is looking forward to this game as much as I am.
The post season push is underway and there are a number of games that should be on the radar this week. Langston Hughes visits Westlake with first place in region 3-AAAAAA on the line. Also on the southside Newton plays at Lovejoy, while Landmark Christian journeys to Eagle’s Landing Christian. On the northside Peachtree Ridge visits Norcross, while Collins Hill hosts Mill Creek as the seeding for the post season begins in Region 7-AAAAAA. Two other games to keep and eye on are Alexander at East Paulding, and Stockbridge at Woodland.
Jon Nelson will be “Kicking It” to keep you updated on these games, and it all starts with Mark Harmon and Jackie Brittain and the GPB Sports Army for Football Fridays in Georgia as Sandy Creek invades Woodward Academy.
Get out and support your favorite high school football team this week and don’t forget to wake with me Saturday morning for the High School Football Power Hour at 7am on Sports Radio 92.9 The Game. Our guest will be Newton Running Back Kurt Taylor.
